Governor Muhammad Badaru Abubakar of Jigawa State yesterday [16 August 2015] said two Chinese companies are ready to invest in the state in the area of sugar and other agricultural products. - China Geo-Engineering Corporation (CGC) plans to develop 9,000 ha of agricultural land in Jigawa. The company has previously carried out road construction and irrigation projects in Jigawa’s largest city, Hadejia.
- China’s Lee Group, which produces shoes in Jigawa, plans to expand into sugar production, molasses and seasoning (e.g. spices) in the near future.
- In September 2014, China’s Geo-Engineering Corporation International Ltd (CGCINT) was planning to invest in 30,000 hectares of cassava farm land around Pointe-Noire, Republic of Congo. The company was hoping to grow cassava in Congo and ship it back to a China-based cassava starch plant. During the same month, Nigeria announced that China was going to establish a cassava processing plant in southeastern Nigeria (Yakurr Area of the state).
- In July 2013, a Chinese agricultural company agreed to supply and setup 50 units of center pivot irrigation equipment on 1,700 ha of northeastern Nigeria’s Borno State.
